  1. Very disappointed to see that no African American speakers were selected to speak at Wordcamp US!!! I applied and was not selected although I have spoken twice at the WordCamp Philly. I am an excellent speaker with an impressive WordPress portfolio. You need to do better and show more diversity!!!

    • Diversity within the WordPress community is an important topic that we should all discuss openly, so I’m glad that you have raised this concern here.

When making decisions about which topics to present, the WordCamp US team based our decisions on content and content alone so that we avoid any unconscious bias around race, religion, creed, sexual orientation, or gender.

I have also sent you an email personally about the talk you submitted so we can discuss that more fully.

I absolutely encourage you to speak your mind about diversity in the WordPress community as well as the tech community at large. We’ll only make change if we continue to discuss it. Change starts with our voices and I hope next year we get many more applications from all parts of our diverse community.

I’m truly sorry that you felt like this was something that was ignored and I completely understand your anger around it. We need to do better. Thank you for holding us accountable. Next year we will reach out to under-represented groups and encourage them to apply so that this doesn’t happen again.
